Craig Cathey of Burlington and Mike Roshelli teamed up for a strong performance in the North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball Championship last week.
The duo ended in a three-way tie for sixth place at 7-under 137 (69, 68) at Brunswick Plantation in Calabash.
Both men have won Alamance County Senior Amateur championships in recent years.
There were 36 teams entered. The winners were Fayetteville’s Gary Robinson and Raleigh’s Keith Waters at 17 under.
In the 70-and-older division, Burlington’s Dick Hogan and partner Mark Wagner of Statesville placed 16th at 2-over 146 (73, 73).
Smith misses cut
Kayla Smith of Burlington missed the cut by one shot in the Women’s Western Amateur in Lake Forest, Illinois.
She shot 3-over 147 (72, 75) for two rounds in stroke play. The top 32 advanced to match play.
Farah O’Keeffe, a rising sophomore at Texas, was the eventual champion.
Smith, who finished her UNC college career in the spring, is the reigning North Carolina Women’s Amateur champion. The Williams alum has a spot in next week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Elon connection to tourney
The general chairman for next week’s Wyndham Championship is an Elon graduate.
Robert Bain, a third-generation owner of Bain Oil, Heating and Air Conditioning, holds the same role that his father, Bobby Bain, held for the 1982 tournament in Greensboro. The special position oversees the volunteer team for the tournament. This year’s PGA Tour stop at Sedgefield Country Club runs from August 8-11.
After transferring from North Carolina State, Bain graduated from Elon in 2004 with a degree in business administration and a minor in economics.
