Kelly Moyer has returned to an athletics director position at River Mill, and a new perspective to go with it.
“Looking forward to having my hand back in it,” Moyer said. “It’s full circle and back.”
Moyer is at the charter school in Graham to fill an opening after the departure of Clay Jones, who was also the boys’ basketball coach.
Moyer, a Burlington woman, will be co-athletics director with Jamie Russell.
“I wasn’t interested in a full AD’s position,” said Moyer, who’s a breast cancer survivor.
She was diagnosed during the pandemic when she had been Clover Garden’s athletics director. She said the cancer created numerous life changes, hoping she has conquered that disease.
“I’m in a much better place physically and mentally,” she said.
Moyer was a college women’s basketball official, working games as high as Division I. With the breast cancer, she retired from that line in her career, though she works as a shot clock operator for some games in Greensboro.
She said she’s proud to maintain a certain involvement through Play4Kay activities, which raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Those are efforts to fight all cancers affecting women in memory of former North Carolina State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow, a Gibsonville native who had a long public battle with breast cancer.
Moyer shared some athletics director duties for a few years in the early 2000s at Williams. Then she spent about a dozen years at River Mill before going to Clover Garden, where she helped transition that school into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. During the past school year, she wasn’t involved in high school athletics while teaching at Chapel Hill High School.
Returning to River Mill, where she’s teaching health and physical education, creates a more convenient commute and a chance to ease back into athletics.
“I felt like I was prepared,” she said.
Harris, who has assisted with coaching the softball team at River Mill, had shared AD duties with Jones. She’s an elementary school and middle school health and physical education teacher.

Jones is the new boys’ basketball coach at Corinth Holders in Johnston County.
Jones was listed as River Mill’s coach for four seasons. The Jaguars had at least 13 wins the past three seasons, including a 13-18 record for 2023-24.
The coaching position remains vacant. Moyer said it’s hoped the spot will be filled by the end of the month.
