James Newton is a dynamic receiver for Western Alamance, but he doesn’t want to limit his impact there.
“I’m still doing a little of everything,” the senior speedster said.
That’s just what the Warriors are likely to be calling for this year.
“We play him everywhere,” coach Jeff Snuffer said.
Newton’s game-changing speed is one of the assets that makes him a big-play threat. He has moves to go with that.
Those were on display last August with his head-turning leap over Cummings star Jonathan Paylor on a huge play in last August’s game. The 85-yard play was called back because of an infraction, but that didn’t keep the video clip from drawing plenty of attention.
“It’s exciting knowing you did that, but it’s doing things I didn’t know I can do,” said Newton, who’s about to become a four-year starter.
After this season, he could be doing more notable things on the football field for Gardner-Webb. Earlier this month, he committed to play for the Football Championship Subdivision program.
Newton, who has been clocked at 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had several offers from FCS teams, including his first one from Campbell last year.
Newton could line up as a wideout or in the slot and can be used as a return specialist. He’s also a defensive back for the Warriors.
