Southern Alamance’s boys’ basketball team had a big comeback in last week’s game against Providence Grove, but not a preferred result.
Southern fell 57-55 when Providence Grove’s Andrew Thomas scored on a putback with 14 seconds left.
Providence Grove led 49-35 before Southern’s rally.
“We finally flipped the switch,” Southern coach Dylan Eppley said.
Southern’s Chris Epps had 18 points and Kolby Kronbergs added 14.
The outcome was a bummer for Eppley, who’s in his second season. He came from Providence Grove, where he was a girls’ basketball coach and assistant football coach, so it was a reunion of sorts.
“I coached some of those (boys’ players) in football,” Eppley said.
There’s a rematch January 9 at Providence Grove.
For the November 26 matchup, there was a late adjustment with the boys’ game moved to the early slot. That came about because after school that day some Southern girls’ players were involved in a minor chain-reaction auto accident near the school. So the girls’ game was shifted to the later tip-off, with Providence Grove winning 59-18.
• Eastern Alamance’s boys lost 67-41 on Tuesday night at Northwood. Prior to Thanksgiving, the Eagles won road victories at Eden Morehead and Northern Guilford.
The Eastern Alamance girls lost 43-35 at Northwood. Previously, the Eagles topped Eden Morehead and lost at Northern Guilford.
- Western Alamance girls were off to a 2-0 start by defeating Northwest Guilford and Providence Day School.
- Boys’ teams from Burlington Christian Academy and The Burlington School were participants in last week’s Hoopstate Hoopsgiving, a two-day event at Peace University in Raleigh.
BCA defeated East Wake 74-59 and lost to Word of God by 67-65 in overtime despite eight 3-pointers and 24 points from Larry Blount.
TBS topped Trinity Academy of Raleigh by 64-54 before a 57-46 setback to John Carroll (Maryland).
Schedule notes
Not all area teams have begun their seasons, while some teams had games postponed Tuesday because opponents were from areas with weather-related school closings.
Southern Alamance is now slated to visit Asheboro on December 16 for girls’ and boys’ games. Williams girls and boys will be home vs. Providence Grove on January 30. Tuesday night’s nixed game would have been the season opener for Williams’ boys.
• Cummings and Williams are scheduled to meet only once this season. Those non-conference girls’ and boys’ games are on the docket for next Wednesday night at Williams.
