ABSS teacher of the year now a contender for state’s teacher of the year designation

Broadview Middle School teacher Chanel Jones has been selected as a finalist for the 2025 North Carolina Teacher of the Year.

The winner of the annual title will be named on April 11 during a ceremony hosted by the Burroughs Welcome Fund at The Umstead Hotel in Cary, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI) announced Monday.

Jones was previously selected as the teacher of the year for the 2025 Piedmont Triad Region in December. She is now one of nine finalists for the designation.

Chanel Jones surprised by the announcement in December of her selection as 2025 Piedmont Triad Region Teacher of the Year.

Jones has taught sixth-grade social studies at Broadview Middle School since 2017.

Jones is known for “her unwavering dedication to her students, building strong relationships with them, and fostering a classroom environment where all students feel valued and supported,” ABSS officials had said following her selection as the school system’s Teacher of the Year in April 2024.

“As a lifelong learner, I continuously deepen my understanding of issues and strategies,” Jones said in the release issued Monday by DPI.  “As a leader, I influence my school and community to prioritize equity. As an innovator, I create solutions to meet my students’ diverse needs. My commitment to these principles drives my efforts to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

To build stronger connections and develop a sense of trust with her students, Jones often attends their sporting events and birthday parties. She also developed a classroom-based laundry service in which she personally takes students’ clothes home to be washed, ensuring that students’ needs were being met without drawing attention to their circumstances.

Jones also serves as the In School Suspension (ISS) coordinator for Broadview Middle and as a high school varsity cheerleading coach for ABSS.

Jones was named the ABSS Teacher of the Year at the annual “Evening of Excellence” on April 30, 2024.
