Hero firemen recognized

One day last month, Stephen Burek wasn’t feeling well, so he decided to walk the few blocks from his home on West Graham Street to Mebane’s fire department where he figured he’d get a blood pressure check.

Good thing he did.

He was having a heart attack.

Firefighters were recognized this week at Mebane’s city council meeting for their quick, life-saving actions in assessing Burek’s condition, stabilizing him, and then overseeing getting him to the hospital.

“My husband is here today because they knew what to do,” Burek’s wife Heather told the council this week, expressing heartfelt, at times tearful, gratitude to all the firefighters who assisted her husband.

Each firefighter was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Mebane mayor Ed Hooks.
