The Cummings girls’ track and field team will go for another state championship after winning last week’s Class 2-A Mideast Regional.
The Class 2-A state meet will be held Saturday at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, a day after the Class 3-A state meet.
In last Friday’s regional at Hedie Trask, D’Anna Cotton of Cummings won the 100-meter hurdles (14.34 seconds), 300 hurdles (43.53), high jump (5 feet, 4 inches), and triple jump (38-9½).
Diamond Moore of Cummings won the long jump at 17-1½ and was the runner-up in the triple jump. The Cavaliers also had the first-place 400 relay (49.23).
Cummings’ Kaili Payne was the runner-up in the 100 hurdles, fourth in the long jump, and sixth in the 300 hurdles.
Teammate Brooke Packingham took third in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.
Cummings scored 118 points in the regional, with all eight entrants scoring in the regional and seven of them advancing to the state meet. Honesti Trollinger, Whitney Griffis, and Nazaiah Hatfield also scored in individual events.
Southeast Alamance’s Janay Pegram was the 100 dash runner-up in 12.24 seconds. Her time of 25.15 seconds in the 200 also was good for second place.
Teammate Elizabeth Thomas was the runner-up in the pole vault (7-0). Geneva Ricketts was fourth in the 400 (1:04.54).
The Stallions were the 400 relay runners-up (50.73) and in fourth place in both the 800 relay (1:50.19) and 3,200 relay (11:46.47).
- In boys’ competition, Southeast’s Maquis Burnette was the 200 champion in 22.31 seconds and the runner-up in the 100 (10.76).
Southeast’s 400 relay was the runner-up in 44.32.
Bartlett Yancey’s Dalleon Johnson won the triple jump (41-11).
Class 3-A Mideast Regional
Western Alamance’s James Newton was the 100 boys’ champion in 10.66 seconds last Friday at UNC Pembroke.
Western’s boys were the 400 relay runner-up (41.30), while Southern Alamance was fourth (41.94).
Western’s 800 relay qualified for states by placing fourth (1:29.63).
Williams’ Jaeden Smith won the long jump by more than a foot, leaping 22-10.
In the 110 hurdles, Thai Meeler of Southern ended up second in 15.52 seconds.
Eastern Alamance high jumper Davontia Clark was second at 6-2, while teammate Samual Raphael was third at 44-6.
For the girls, Western’s 400 relay was the regional champion in 46.75 seconds.
Western’s Taliyha Brown was third in the 100 in 12.17 and Williams’ Ava Childress was third in the 800 in 2:24.06.
