The basement of May Memorial Library has been a veritable obstacle course of roll carts and boxes as the Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries get ready for their next semiannual book sale later this week.
This forthcoming fall sale, which will run from September 5th to the 14th, is already shaping up to be quite the bonanza, according to Laura Wright, one of the three co-chairs overseeing the 10-day event.
“I just got in 22 boxes of books yesterday,” Wright recollected last week as she unboxed some of the latest donations. “We have also received donations this year from Wilson Library in Chapel Hill. They had books donated to them that they didn’t need for their collection, and we’ve gotten 40 boxes of books for this sale.”
Wright acknowledged that the Friends were still getting donations when she spoke to a reporter a week ago Wednesday. She added that the organization will continue to accept books even when the sale is progress, allowing volunteers to put out the latest contributions as quickly as earlier ones are snapped up by book lovers and bargain hunters.
The year’s fall sale will formally kick off on Friday with a “members only” session at 12:00 noon. Entry to this special session will be limited to the group’s dues-paying members, although annual memberships will be available at the door for anyone who isn’t up to date on their dues.
The rest of the sale will be open to all comers, who can access the sale venue from the Davis Street entrance of May Memorial at 342 South Spring Street in Burlington. Shoppers can drop by this basement-level location from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. As usual, all proceeds from the sale will benefit the four public libraries in Alamance County.
