High school swimming teams in Alamance County will hold most meets at New Millennium Fitness in Mebane and the Alamance County Community YMCA in Burlington for the 2025-26 season.
Schools had a months-long quest to find adequate regular venues because Maynard Aquatic Center in Burlington is shut down for renovations.
Many teams in the past competed at the Orange County Sportsplex (formerly named Triangle Sportsplex) in Hillsborough. That has been a longtime venue for swimming in the region.
But Alamance County schools no longer have conference connections with Hillsborough schools Orange and Cedar Ridge. Those schools largely had facilitated use of the sportsplex, Alamance-Burlington School System athletics director Todd Davis said.
The ABSS schools have used other locations such as New Millennium Fitness for past meets. There are tight conditions at times.
“It wasn’t bad,” Southeast Alamance athletics director B.J. Congdon said.
There are space limitations at the YMCA, but meets have gone off there with success in the past.
“I’m glad they’re able to host us even if it’s just a couple (meets),” Davis said.
Davis said a couple of teams are using a pool in Elon University’s recreation center for practices. That pool’s size doesn’t meet regulations for competitions.
Schools in Alamance County have made arrangements for a couple of meets, including the Mid-Carolina Conference championships, at the sportsplex in Hillsborough.
Burlington Christian Academy and The Burlington School are using the YMCA for meets.
