ALAMANCE NEWS EXCLUSIVE At odds: city vs. city – Mebane sues Graham

What started out, in 2017, as a cooperative venture with Mebane “buying” some of the capacity of Graham’s wastewater treatment plant has turned into a major controversy between the two neighboring municipalities.

Graham has undertaken an $84.6 million upgrade and expansion of its wastewater treatment plant, and it has expected Mebane to contribute about $18 million toward the project.

Mebane, however, contends that it was never consulted about, and did not approve, of the upgrade and expansion, and is offering to pay no more than $10.7 million toward the project.

Read comprehensive coverage of Mebane’s lawsuit and the unfolding controversy in this week’s (Dec. 11) edition.

Meanwhile, Mebane also claims that the disagreement over the wastewater plant has prompted Graham to deliberately slow-walk approvals for two significant projects: the Buc-ee’s travel plaza and the Koury retail and residential project, both located along Trollingwood-Hawfields Road.  While both have Mebane addresses, the Buc-ee’s is technically within the industrial park that is a joint project (with shared revenues) of both cities and Alamance County government.  Read details on the dispute here:
