A tractor-trailer caught fire after a crash into a concrete barrier on I-40/I-85 in Graham on Wednesday afternoon.
A video of the fire provided to The Alamance News shows the immediate aftermath at the scene.
NC DOT confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the fire would necessitate closing the westbound lanes of I-85/40, past exit 150 near Jimmie Kerr Road, for two hours, with an expected high impact to traffic due to the evening rush hour.
The truck burst into flames at 4:04 p.m. Wednesday, according to an eyewitness’ account. The truck appeared to have struck the concrete barrier separating the north/east lanes from the south/west lanes. To bystanders, it appeared perhaps the fuel line ruptured, which caused the flames which rapidly engulfed the truck.
The fire spread to the trailer portion of the tractor-trailer, with fire crews simultaneously working to put out the front fire (in the cab) and the rear portion of the trailer.
There appear to be no other vehicles impacted by the fire other than the truck.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash and fire, westbound/southbound traffic continued to pass the burning truck, but DOT later said the road would be closed for several hours. DOT’s latest estimate is that the lanes are expected to reopen by 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, DOT is having traffic exit the interstate at exit 150 (Jimmie Kerr Road), left to Cherry lane, then right on Cherry Lane, and right onto N.C. 54 back to I-85/40.
