The points were piling up so fast for Southeast Alamance in Tuesday night’s girls’ basketball game with visiting Western Alamance that senior Clara LaChapelle was bound to be a part of that.
Again, she was – reaching the 1,000-point career mark in a 55-26 Mid-Carolina Conference victory.
“It speaks more to my teammates because they trust me to score,” LaChapelle said. “My teammates were hunting for me (to get shots).”
LaChapelle needed 12 points to reach the milestone and that’s the exact number she posted. Rreanna Johnson’s 16 points were tops for the Stallions (14-0 overall, 3-0 Mid-Carolina Conference).
Meanwhile, coach Amy Sarratt hit the 200-win mark in her coaching career.
Tuesday’s match-up pitted teams that won state championships last March, though now Western and Southeast are in the same conference and same classification. So there was buzz about this clash, with Western (7-2, 1-1) arriving on a seven-game winning streak.
“We talked about respecting the opponent,” Sarratt said. “It’s good for the teams and getting fans out.”

Western’s Emery Webster hit a 3-pointer on the first possession before Southeast bolted to a 29-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Stallions were up 45-5 on LaChapelle’s final basket with 3:58 left in the first half, which ended at 46-8.
“A lot of it is they’re really good, and that’s the best team we’ve seen,” Western coach Tooey Loy said. “We’re not that bad, but maybe they’re that good.”
No Southeast starters played in the second half, which was conducted with a running clock because of the mercy rule.
Sarratt said she liked how the Stallions turned defense into quality offensive chances.
“They’d get a layup at the other end,” Loy said.
The Stallions knew there was attention on the game because of the past season.
“The main goal is to focus on this year,” LaChapelle said. “We have a standard and we’re always going to play at that standard. With that standard, sometimes games like this are going to come.”
Western, which was to play Northeast Guilford on Wednesday night, will try to sort out things in advance of Friday night’s visit from Eastern Alamance.
“It’s a learning lesson for us,” Loy said. “I don’t know if it was a good lesson.”
Most of LaChapelle’s points have come for Southeast, though she played as a freshman for Southern Alamance before Southeast opened.
In addition to Southeast, Sarratt’s coaching victories have come at Wake Forest-Rolesville (which no longer exists) and Southern. Southeast’s all-time record is 63-11.
Other results
Eastern Alamance won 89-43 at Cummings on Tuesday in the Mid-Carolina Conference. The Eagles are 9-2, 3-0.
Cummings, which won 62-52 last week against visiting Roxboro Community in a non-league game, dropped to 7-3, 1-2.
- Southern Alamance topped visiting Williams 48-34 on Tuesday in the Mid-Carolina Conference, improving to 2-8, 1-2. Williams is 3-6, 0-2.
- Williams fell 67-39 at home to Southeast Guilford on Friday night in non-league play.
