The Burlington School had an ideal start in Friday night’s boys’ basketball rivalry game at Burlington Christian Academy, so the Spartans ended up with a rewarding result.
Julian Lowe scored 13 of his 22 points in the third quarter as TBS posted a 77-44 victory in the first meeting of the season between the Central Carolina Athletic Conference teams.
Lowe is new to the matchup, but did his part.
“A rivalry like this, we had to keep our heads level,” he said.
The game might have served as a turnaround for the Spartans because of their strong outing.
“We really hadn’t found our identity until (this game),” TBS coach George Marshall said. “That’s the best part about it.”
Brayden Miles and Geren Holmes each finished with 13 points and Karon Watlington, who a year ago was playing for BCA, produced nine of his 12 points in the first half.
“The environment, I loved it,” Watlington said.
Marshall particularly liked the work from the guards, with Watlington, Drew Johnson, and Asante Phillip dictating the tempo.
“The passing was very good,” Marshall said. “It was about trusting our guys.”
TBS built a 15-5 lead and stretched it to 41-21 by halftime. Then Lowe scored the Spartans’ next eight points in less than three minutes to begin the second half.
“It was good to make my mark,” said Lowe, who was 8-for-11 with four 3-point baskets. “I’m looking to develop my rebounding and make winning plays.”
There was a running clock by game’s end.
Pierce Bowman and Jordan Jacobson each scored 14 points for BCA.
- TBS went on to win two more games during the weekend. The Spartans topped Fayetteville Academy 68-62 on Saturday with Holmes hitting for 22 points, Watlington scoring 14, and Johnson posting 13.
Then came Monday’s 81-68 victory against Quality Education Academy, with Lowe’s 19 points and Johnson’s 17 points leading the way. That duo combined to shoot 15-for-23 with six 3-pointers from the field.
- The night before the matchup with TBS, BCA drilled visiting Forsyth Home Educators 76-35. On Tuesday night, BCA topped visiting Carolina Friends 69-45 in a conference game to level its overall record at 10-10.
- In Friday’s girls’ game, TBS rolled to a 53-17 victory as Kamryn Russell had 21 points and Kennedy Harrelson scored 15.
For BCA, Kylee Pennington provided 11 points. BCA also lost last week to visiting Forsyth Home Educators by 48-13.
