QUESTION: What has been the response in Alamance County to a massive state-level effort to flesh out the information in voter registration records?
ANSWER: The county’s election office has apparently been doing brisk business since the N.C. board of elections launched a statewide campaign to reconcile its voter rolls with data in other state databases.
Dawn Hurdle, the county’s elections director, conceded that she and her staff have been kept on their toes by this state-level initiative.
“We’ve had a pretty good response,” Hurdle elaborated on Wednesday. “We have had telephone calls and people bringing them in for three days now. Our doors have constantly been busy with people bringing in their forms.”
This sudden surge of activity began less than a week ago when the state board of elections sent out letters to hundreds of thousands of voters across North Carolina whose driver’s license or social security numbers couldn’t be matched with information that other state agencies have complied.
When it announced this this mass mailing on February 3, the state board declared that it intended to contact more than 241,000 voters “on behalf” of its county-level equivalents to obtain additional information.
Hurdle acknowledged that she isn’t certain how many of these individuals reside in Alamance County, although she added that there are another 840 people on the county’s voter rolls who have no identification numbers on record to compare against other state databases.
