Cummings swept the top three spots in three events to win another state championship in girls’ indoor track and field, securing the Class 4-A title Thursday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Senior D’Anna Cotton won four events. She was named the Most Valuable Participant in the meet for the third year in a row.
Kaili Payne, Diamond Moore, and Honesti Trollinger also contributed with multiple place finishes for Cummings.
The Cavaliers scored in five of the 15 events. Cotton racked up 40 of the team’s points.
Cummings compiled 87 points to runner-up First Flight’s 77 and third-place Eastern Wayne’s 66.
The Cavaliers, under veteran coach Donnie Davis, won their 13th indoor state championship, including its second straight.
Cummings swept the 55-meter hurdles with Cotton (8.04 seconds) Payne (8.06) and Trollinger (8.35); took the top three spots in the long jump with Cotton (18 feet, 6¼ inches), Moore (18-¾) and Payne (17-5¼); and were in the top three positions in the triple jump with Cotton (40-5), Moore (35-11¼), and Payne (35-5).
Cotton’s winning high jump came by clearing 5-5.
The Cavaliers also scored in the 800 relay by finishing fourth in 1:51.28 with Payne, Nazaiah Hatfield, Leyah Whitaker, and Trollinger.
First Flight scored in seven events, winning three of those.
Eastern Wayne was the boys’ champion.
Class 3-A
Bartlett Yancey’s Dalleon Johnson was the Most Valuable Participant in the boys’ meet Wednesday, winning one event and finishing as the runner-up in two others.
Johnson’s long jump of 22-¼ was the best mark, with teammate Zavion Hughes in third place at 21-1½. Johnson was second in the high jump (6-0) and triple jump (41-9).
