Just like against Southern Alamance, Southern Lee’s baseball team needed three games to win a series.
Southern Lee prevailed in the Class 6-A state championship round by defeating South Caldwell at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Southern Lee won 7-2 in Friday night’s Game 1. South Caldwell won 8-7 in Game 2 on Saturday, but later in the day Southern Lee responded for a 12-2, five-inning decision to secure the title. Southern Lee was in the state finals for the first time.
The previous week, Southern Lee topped Southern Alamance in the Eastern Regional finals in a series that also was extended to three games.
Other baseball champions crowned last week in Burlington were Rosewood (Class 2-A), North Lincoln (Class 5-A), and Marvin Ridge (Class 7-A).
Titles determined in Holly Springs were won by Charlotte Providence (Class 8-A), North Lincoln (Class 5-A), Whiteville (Class 3-A), and North Carolina Leadership Academy (Class 1-A).
Softball
West Carteret, which eliminated Southeast Alamance in the Class 5-A East Region finals, lost in the state championship series in two games to Enka, which won 11-5 and 4-0 in games at Duke.
Robbinsville (Class 1-A), Roxboro Community (Class 2-A), and South Caldwell (Class 6-A) also won titles at Duke.
Other softball champions, in series contested at UNC Greensboro, were Charlotte Providence (Class 8-A), Weddington (Class 7-A), Southwestern Randolph (Class 4-A) and West Wilkes (Class 3-A).
Girls’ soccer
After defeating previously undefeated Western Alamance in last week’s Class 5-A East Regional final, Dixon’s postseason run ended with a loss.
Hickory scored two second-half goals to defeat Dixon 2-0 in Friday night’s state championship game at Durham County Stadium.
Other soccer champions across three days of finals were Woods Charter (Class 1-A), Christ the King (Class 2-A), Pine Lake Prep (Class 3-A), Carrboro (Class 4-A), Charlotte Catholic (Class 6-A), Holly Springs (Class 7-A), and Myers Park (Class 8-A).
