It’s been a race against the weather, as well as a tight timetable, for construction crews at the New Market Square shopping center, where work has been proceeding apace on a new branch of Chase Bank.
This new branch office in Burlington is one of more than 500 that JPMorgan Chase & Co. intends to open over the coming three years as this financial services behemoth strives to maintain its market dominance in the U.S.
At least 160 of these new branches are slated to be completed this calendar year, according to a news release that came out of JPMorgan Chase’s corporate headquarters in February.
“Chase is accelerating growth in central states and under-served regions,” the company announced in this news release. “Major expansion is planned for North and South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Massachusetts, and Tennessee in 2026.”
The firm’s proposed location in Burington will mark Chase’s first foray into Alamance Coun-ty. The timing of this project, moreover, coincides with a frenzy of other construction at New Market Square, which is home to the county’s only Harris Teeter grocery store.
Much of the recent upheaval at this shopping center has been connected to intersection improvements that the NCDOT has in the offing at South Church Street’s juncture with Shadowbrook Drive. The work on the new bank has been a relatively late addition to this cyclone of construction work – with the plans for the new bank getting the all clear from the city less than a year ago.
These plans, which were approved by a staff-level technical review on September 22, envision a one-story bank with a floor area of 3,096 square feet and a drive-thru window that will serve one lane of vehicles. Burlington’s inspection department went on to issue a building permit for this edifice on March 3of this year, paving the way for the construction that’s currently in progress.
