An adult brother and sister found themselves on the court docket last week when their sibling rivalry apparently reached a point that required the intervention of sheriff’s deputies.
The office of Alamance County’s sheriff has filed criminal charges against both 40-year-old Joshua Issac Nansezth Cates and his 31-year-old sister, Katelyn Emma Esquivel, over this fraternal fracas on Wednesday, July 8.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were initially dispatched to the pair’s home at 1051 Wyatt Road in Green Level after Esquivel called 9-1-1 to report a domestic assault.
Esquivel met the deputies outside the home and informed them that she and her brother had initially quarreled after she found him inebriated. She added that her brother, who was still inside the residence, had gone on to repeatedly punch her before she extricated herself.
The deputies ordered Cates to exit the residence, only to have him barrel out of the door with a large kitchen knife in his hand. Cates reportedly dropped the knife when bidden to do so but continued to charge at the deputies, who used a taser to bring him down.
The sheriff’s office has gone on to charge Cates with felony-level assault with serious injury as well as another felony for assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. The 40-year-old white male also faces the misdemeanor offenses of assault on a female, resisting a public officer, and injury to personal property.
Cates has been jailed without bond since his arrest.
As the deputies dug deeper into Esquivel’s account, they reportedly learned that she had set off her brother’s frenzy by punching him in the face. As a result, the 31-year-old white female faces one misdemeanor count of simple assault. Her bond has been set at $1,000.
