SBI conducting standard officer-involved shooting
A local sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave after shooting a suspect who allegedly brandished a gun in an encounter with law enforcement officials earlier this week.
According to the office Alamance County’s sheriff, this “officer-involved shooting” occurred on Monday afternoon when a pair of deputies were sent to a location south of Snow Camp to investigate a report about a “suspicious” vehicle.
The two deputies ultimately found a male suspect inside the vehicle, which was parked behind a vacant building when they arrived on the scene at about 3:10 p.m. According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect “produced” a firearm, which the deputies ordered him to put down. When he refused to comply, one of the deputies fired a single shot, wounding the suspect.
The sheriff’s office is withholding the name of both the suspect and the deputy who fired the gunshot pending a formal inquiry by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. According to the sheriff’s office, this sort of inquiry is standard procedure in any “officer-involved shooting.”
The sheriff’s office goes on to note that the two deputies administered first aid to the suspect immediately after the shooting. The wounded male was then airlifted to a hospital, where he remains.
According to the sheriff’s office, neither of the two deputies was hurt in the encounter, although the one who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave – again, as per agency protocol.
