Betty Earp Thomas


Betty Earp Thomas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, ending a life full of love for family and friends and a joy for life.

Born on June 27, 1938, in Burlington to William A. and Margaret Steele Earp. She was a graduate of Williams High School, Class of 1956, and attended Elon College. Betty was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church where her husband’s grandmother was a charter member. She served on the Altar Guild and as Sunday School teacher, wedding director and consultant, and circle leader. She was a house manager of the Paramount Theatre for many years and enjoyed this greatly. She also enjoyed serving on the Burlington Beautification Commission and the board of directors of the Alamance County Historical Museum.

She supported her husband and son in their accounting practice. She spent considerable time in Melbourne Florida when her daughter was ill, caring for her and her daughter’s five wonderful children, including two sets of twins. She was also actively involved in the early life of her son’s three children in Burlington. She enjoyed her neighbors on Engleman Avenue and Sunnybrook Drive as well as her second residence in the Ocean Ridge section of Atlantic Beach. She was a former member of the Dogwood Garden Club and some bridge groups.
Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Avery; her son, Scott (Nancy), of Burlington, and son-in-law, Glenn Latta, of Melbourne, FL; grandchildren, Benjamin Thomas (Kelly) of Pensacola, FL, Elizabeth Hall (Thomas) of Washington, NC, Rebecca Thomas (fiancé Ian) of Dublin, CA, Katherine Pawley (Mike) of Chesapeake, VA, Michael Latta (Lauren) of Gainesville, FL, Stephanie Latta (special friend Pierce) of Tacoma, WA, Stephen Latta (Kiera) of Gainesville, FL, and Christopher Latta (Samantha) of West Melbourne, FL; Great-Grandchildren Adelyn and Siena Pawley, Courtney Latta, Julia Thomas, and Matthew Hall; and Brother, Ron Earp (Marcia) of Burlington.

Betty was predeceased by her parents and a daughter, Karen T. Latta. A memorial service will be held at Front Street United Methodist Church at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 3rd with a reception following. A private graveside service for the family will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery.
