Jillian Brunton hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Western Alamance’s softball team a 6-4 victory against East Lincoln in Game 1 of the Class 3-A state championship series Friday at UNC Greensboro Softball Stadium.
It marked Brunton’s second home run of the game. She also scored the game-tying run that ultimately extended the game.
The Warriors (23-3) will try to add to the drama from that extra-inning game in Game 2 at noon Saturday as they attempt to clinch their first state championship. If necessary, a third game will be played at 3:00 p.m.
Winning pitcher Taylor Apple struck out 11 batters. She also smacked a solo home run.

East Lincoln (23-3) led 4-3 after scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Warriors pulled even in the sixth when Brunton, who had three of the team’s seven hits, scored from second base on an East Lincoln miscue.
Brunton opened the scoring with a second-inning home run. Western’s streak of consecutive shutouts ended at 10 games when the Mustangs scored in the third inning to even the score at 1-1. Apple’s homer put the Warriors back ahead in the fourth.
