BREAKING FRI.: Principal, teacher asst. charged in connection with assault on student at Woodlawn Middle School

The principal of Woodlawn Middle School has been suspended after being charged with failing to report a crime against a juvenile, a misdemeanor.  A teacher assistant at the school was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and assault on a child under 12 years of age.

Teacher assistant William Michael Jackson was charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse and one count of misdemeanor assault on a child under 12 years of age.

Woodlawn principal Thomas William “Tom” Kazimir was charged with one count of misdemeanor failure to report crimes against juveniles.

According to the school system, Jackson, as a 10-month employee, had his last day yesterday.

Kazimir is currently suspended with pay while the district and law enforcement investigations continue, according to the school system. The charges were filed yesterday by the Alamance County sheriff’s department.

According to the sheriff’s department, the Major Crimes Unit of the department an investigation of an alleged abuse of a student at Woodlawn Middle School on April 26. During the investigation, deputies developed probable cause to believe that a teacher’s assistant physically assaulted a student during school hours.  The department also consulted with the district attorney’s office in deciding to make the formal charges.

The school system is notifying Woodlawn Middle School staff and families about these developments.

Teacher assistant William Jackson has been employed since 2020, according to the school system.

Kazimir has been principal at Woodlawn for the past year; previously he was a 10-year assistant principal with the school system (between 2013-2023); and prior to that he was employed as a social studies teacher between 2000-2013.
