A juvenile in Mebane is dead after what police believe to be an accidental discharge of a firearm in his car on Wednesday night.
Mebane police report that at 7:55 p.m., their officers responded to a report of shots fired near the intersection of West Lee Street and South First Street, about a block away from the Mebane Recreation Center.
Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle in the area, discovered a juvenile who had sustained a critical injury, and recovered a firearm, according to a press release from the Mebane police department. Initial findings indicate that the weapon was accidentally discharged, according to the police.
In a subsequent investigation, “forensic evidence confirmed that a single round had been fired from within the vehicle.”
The juvenile received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local medical facility; however, within the hour, he was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet identified the victim.
