An appointment to the local Alcoholic Beverage Control board is just one of the items that will confront Burlington’s city council when its members gather on Monday for their next monthly work session.
The seat up for consideration that afternoon is one of two that Bur-lington currently has on the Alamance Municipal ABC Board, which oversees six state-owned liquor stores that are located in Burlington, Mebane, and Graham.
One of Burlington’s seats is currently held by Lisa Kirpatrick, who was tapped in June of 2025 for a three-year term on the board. The other seat has been assigned to Burlington attorney Frank Longest since July of 2023.
According to John Vernon, a public information specialist for the city of Burlington, Longest has chosen not to seek reappointment to his seat. In the meantime, the city has received applications from six other individuals who are interested in this position. Vernon identified these contenders as Christina Benson, Ted E. Chandler, Celo Faucettte, Terri McGee-Paylor, Scotty Showerman, and James D. Smith.
The applicants for Longest’s seat on the ABC board were originally presented to the city council at its monthly work session on July 6. The council nevertheless resolved not to make a selection that afternoon, when it firmed up a slate of various other appointments to the city’s municipal boards and committees.
Vernon recalled that the council had postponed its choice of Longest successor in order to see if any of the six applicants would be willing to accept vacancies on other boards that didn’t have any claimants.
“There were no applicants for the board of adjustment,” he told The Alamance News earlier this week, “and the council wanted to see if anyone who had applied for the ABC board would be willing to serve on the board of adjustment.”
Vernon added that ABC candidate Terri McGee-Paylor has since agreed to fill an opening for an alternate on Burling-ton’s board of adjustment.
Vernon said that the council will presumably deal with this post as well as the selection of Longest’s successor during its next work session on Monday, August 17.
The other appointments which the council considered on July 6 were formally approved a day later as part of a so-called “consent agenda” of routine and non-controversial items that its members adopted en bloc. These appointments are as follows:
- Arboretum Board: Appointment of James Shover;
- Board of Adjustment: Appointment of Brian Ireland;
- Burlington Housing Authority: Reappointments of Charles Carter and Millicent Cash; Appointments of Kathleen Jacques and Sandra Reid;
- Planning and Zoning Commission: Reappointment of Ethan Raynor, as the commission’s ETJ representative (pending approval from Alamance County’s commissioners); appointments of Alice Wesselman, Wes Sartin, and Dorothy Clapp – the latter as an alternate from Burling-ton’s territorial limits;
- Public Transit Advisory Commission: Reappointment of Roger Mei-senbach; Appointment of Genvieve Barnes;
- Recreation and Parks Commission: Reappointments of Jennifer An-drews and Thomas Phelps; Appointments of Patrica Gamble and Amy Harris;
- Traffic Commission: Reappointments of Sid-hoora Kadya and Phillip Keller as pedestrian or cyclist representatives; Appointment of Warren Parks;
- Tree and Appearance Commission: Reappointments of Pat Pelt and Ellen Ritter; Appointments of Shawna Gentert and Michael Adolf.
