Burlington man arrested for non-fatal shooting

Police in Burlington have arrested a 38-year-old man after he allegedly shot another area resident during a violent confrontation in the small hours on Thursday.

Sammy Mebane, black, male, 38, was ultimately taken into custody shortly after the shooting of Joseph Grant along the 500-block of Dudley Street.

Grant, who is also 38 years old, was seriously, but non-fatally wounded, according to the city’s police department. He has since been released from an area hospital.

The police department has gone on to charge Mebane with two felonies for his alleged role in this case. He faces one charge for assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and the infliction of serious injury. He is also accused of the illegal possession of a firearm as a previously convicted felon.

Mebane has been jailed under a $200,000 bond since his arrest.
