Bryson Cokley’s 3-point basket with 2.4 seconds to play gave him a career-high 29 points and provided Elon with the winning points in an 81-78 victory at William & Mary in Coastal Athletic Association men’s basketball Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Seven of Cokley’s eight field goals were 3-pointers. He also was 6-for-6 on free throws.
Elon led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Tribe had a 10-0 run and pulled even several times before Cokley’s shot ended a four-game losing streak for the Phoenix.
Chandler Cuthrell’s 17 points, eight rebounds, and career-best five assists were big for the Phoenix, and teammate Isaac Harrell posted 14 points. Elon had lost on its last four trips to Kaplan Arena.
Elon (14-13 overall, 6-8 CAA) swept William & Mary this season, with both margins at three points.
Last Thursday, Elon fell 65-54 at first-place UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks led by as many as 18 points in the second half. Harrell had 12 points for the Phoenix.
Elon will come off a weeklong layoff for Saturday night’s game vs. visiting North Carolina A&T at Schar Center.
Elon women fall in lone game
Elon’s women’s team dropped a 68-59 CAA decision to host Drexel on Friday in Philadelphia in the team’s only game during the past week.
Tamia Watkins shot 7-for-11 from the field and had 16 points for the Phoenix, which began the fourth quarter on a 10-0 to trim its deficit to 53-46.
Elon (11-13, 6-6) plays its next two games at home, with Campbell visiting Friday night and Northeastern the opponent Sunday afternoon.
