A change of name may be en route for one roadway in Burlington after city staff members noticed that another street within the city’s municipal limits already had dibs on the same appellation.
Burlington’s city council will hold a public hearing next Tuesday about this proposal to rechristen Hooker Street – as this stretch of right-of-way at the juncture of Short Street and Meridian Avenue is currently designated.
The council agreed to schedule this hearing last week after Andrew Shore, the city’s mapping director, revealed that the same sobriquet is claimed by another street in Burlington’s Morgantown neighborhood.
Shore added that the conflict between the two street names had never previously come to his attention due to the rudimentary state of the Hooker Street that’s up for renaming.
“It’s basically a paper street,” the city’s mapping director explained during a city council work session last Monday, “and it’s never been named with a street sign.”
Shore went on to suggest that council redesignate the duplicative Hooker Street as an extension of Meridian Avenue. The council, for its part, agreed to hold a state-mandated public hearing on the proposed name change at its regularly-scheduled meeting on February 18.
