Cummings is without a volleyball team this year because of a lack of interested participants, coach Cherie Pettiford said.
Pettiford, also the school’s athletics director, said half of the 10 players on last year’s team were seniors.
“The interest really dropped off,” she said.
In 2021, the Cavaliers went 1-13, including a 1-11 record in Mid-Carolina Conference play.
Pettiford said ideally there will be enough interested girls to put together a team next year.
“Absolutely, we’re going to try to keep after it and see if we can get enough interest by the end of this school year,” she said.
Cummings also doesn’t have a girls’ tennis, girls’ golf or girls’ cross country team during this fall season. Within the athletics department, that leaves cheerleading as the only fall activity for girls at the school.
Meanwhile, Cummings is fielding a junior varsity boys’ soccer team this fall because of increased number of players taking part in the program, Pettiford said.
— Western golf alum receives scholarship: Brad Grajzar out of Western Alamance was one of 14 recipients of a David Parrott Memorial Scholarship as presented by the Carolinas Golf Foundation. The announcement came last month, with seven boys and seven girls selected for 2022. Grajzar was a $1,000 scholarship recipient.

Awardees are deemed to be deserving high school seniors from the Carolinas for outstanding display of academic achievement, sportsmanship and community service.
Grajzar is a freshman in the Queens University men’s golf program in Charlotte.
— Back with Southern baseball: Jeremy Knight has returned to the baseball coaching staff at Southern Alamance after two seasons as head coach with Asheboro’s team in the Coastal Plain League, a summer college circuit.
Knight had been on coach Jason Smith’s staff with the Patriots, though that was in a limited capacity in 2021 when the pandemic-impacted high school season was shifted later on the calendar and overlapped with the CPL schedule.
Knight also has resumed a role as a teacher for exceptional children at Southern.
