In what shapes up as perhaps the biggest week of the season for Elon’s baseball team is off to a stellar start.
The Phoenix upended No. 2 Wake Forest 5-3 on Tuesday night at Latham Park.
Elon (20-9) beat a team ranked in the top two nationally for the third time in 18 all-time attempts.
Tanner Holliman homered and five Elon relievers combined for six scoreless innings after Wake Forest (26-4) scored three first-inning runs. Spencer Bauer (3-0) worked two innings for the victory, and Ben Simon notched his sixth save.

LET THE CELEBRATING BEGIN
The outcome avenged Elon’s 20-0 loss March 21 in Winston-Salem. It’s the first victory for the Phoenix at home against Wake Forest since 2012.
Elon has won three in a row and 13 of its last 15 games.
Next for the Phoenix (10-2 Colonial Athletic Association) is a monumental three-game CAA series against visiting UNC Wilmington (18-10, 9-3), which is second in the league.
The teams meet Friday night and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
