The Cutting Board was the site for the recent Elon College High School class of 1955’s 70th class reunion. Classmates have spent 82 years as friends, starting in the days when kids started first grade at the first room in the hallway and each year moved down the hall until they were big kids and moved upstairs and then out the door of Mr. Lowes’ classroom into life as adults.
This group has been named the “Retreads” because, after raising families and building careers, they came back together at their 40th reunion and have been together ever since. Many trips taken led to the “Retreads” name because it was the second time around and they were constantly traveling, eating, and using any excuse for a party.
They are at Zacks every Friday at 4:00 p.m., taking almost two hours to eat a hotdog and have an ice cream. They are also at the big table in the back of Biscuitville on Huffman Mill Road the last Monday of every month at 8:30 a.m.
The group is known for practical jokes on each other – like placing a dead funeral wreath on a lawn for a friend’s birthday. There are many examples that could be listed.
The number of graduates has dwindled from 23 to 12. Most survivors are single now, but no one is alone. There is nothing like old friends when you are laughing and when you are crying. The Retreads have had a lifetime of both – together.
