Darius Stokes has joined Elon men’s basketball team as an assistant coach after previous stops at Fairleigh Dickinson and Army.

Stokes, a former Iowa player, was on the Big Ten Conference team when Elon coach Billy Taylor was an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes.

Stokes fills the vacancy created by the departure of assistant coach Josh Gross for a similar position at UNC Greensboro in May. Gross, a former UNCG player, was on the Elon staff for both of Taylor’s first two seasons.

Stokes also is connected to Elon assistant coach Greg Herenda, spending four seasons on his staff at Fairleigh Dickinson (where Stokes finished his playing career). Then came the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons as director of program development at Richmond, which made the NCAA Tournament in 2022.

Stokes’ father, Greg Stokes, played as a center at Iowa, where his number was retired. Kiah Stokes, his sister, played on national championship teams for Connecticut and was on WNBA championship teams in 2022 and 2023 with the Las Vegas Aces.

Elon alum guides national runner-up team

Texas A&M’s baseball team under coach Jim Schlossnagle, a 1992 Elon graduate, played in the College World Series finals.

But after winning Game 1 of the best-of-3 finals Saturday, the Aggies lost Sunday and again Monday night. It was a 6-5 setback in Game 3.

Less than 24 hours later, news broke that Schlossnagle, 53, would be leaving Texas A&M to fill the coaching vacancy at rival Texas. The Longhorns announced Tuesday night that he’s their new coach.

Schlossnagle, an Elon pitcher for one season and later an assistant coach for the then-Fighting Christians, finished his third season at Texas A&M with his second trip to the CWS with the Aggies. In 18 seasons as Texas Christian’s coach, he took the team to the CWS five times, but has yet to leave with the championship.

All-ACC academic honors

Two North Carolina State athletes from Alamance County have spots on All-Atlantic Coast Conference academic teams for the past school year. They are men’s swimmer Noah Henderson out of Western Alamance and men’s golfer Nick Mathews out of Eastern Alamance.

For men’s track and field, Duke’s Jonathan Horn, a former Burlington Christian Academy pole vaulter, was listed on the All-ACC academic team.
