Elon’s town council presented life saving awards to six firefighters (five of whom were present), who helped save the life of an Elon coed recently.
The incident occurred on the Elon University campus in the courtyard of the Colonnades neighborhood near Building A.
The 18-year-old student was found lying the courtyard when firefighters arrived.
The young woman was determined to be not breathing and not conscious, the fire chief described to the town council last Monday – or “pulseless and apneic,” according to the fire department description, and her condition was upgraded to a “cardiac arrest.”
CPR and AED shocks were used to resuscitate her. The young woman regained a pulse, and EMS, which had subsequently arrived, took her to the hospital.
The young woman ultimately survived “due to the rapid, coordinated, and professional actions of all involved,” according to the town.
Elon fire chief Landon Massey described the firefighters’ actions and called each to the front of the meeting chambers last week where mayor Emily Sharpe presented them with a certificate of recognition.
Those recognized were captain Gary Pierce, lieutenant Isaac Faucette, firefighter James Torbett, and engineers Austin Durham, Josh Warren, and Wes Hunt (who was absent).
