The new offensive coordinator for Elon’s football team has been a head coach on the collegiate level.
Doug Martin was hired a few weeks after the Phoenix parted with Drew Folmar.
Martin, 61, is a former head coach at Kent State and New Mexico State. He also has been an offensive coordinator at Boston College, New Mexico State, East Carolina and East Tennessee State.
His most-recent head coaching role came with New Mexico State from 2013-21, when his teams went 25-74. At Kent State, his record was 29-53 from 2004-10.
His players at Kent State included Julian Edelman, who was a collegiate quarterback and a 12-year NFL receiver and part of three Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots, and Josh Cribbs, who also had a notable NFL career.
During the past two years, Martin was a coordinator for the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers and UFL’s Memphis Showboats. One of the Breakers quarterbacks was Elon alum Davis Cheek.
“Not only is he one of the best people you will meet, but he has an adaptable and innovative offensive mind that has grown with the current state of football,” Cheek said in a statement from the university. “Coach Martin’s track record speaks for itself in his coaching proficiency. Most importantly, he has an uncanny ability to get the most out of his players by approaching them with humility and understanding.”
Martin was a Kentucky quarterback in the mid-1980s.
