Elon’s town council has signed off on a special use permit that will allow Elon University to set up a new “gateway” at the intersection of University Drive and O’Kelly Avenue.
The council gave its unanimous nod to this permit during a regularly-scheduled meeting on Tuesday after the town’s planning director informed its members about a substantial change in the university’s original plan for this entrance.
Elon University had initially asked the town for permission to set up a bell tower along a median within the intersection as well as a pair of 32-square foot signs on either side of the intersection mounted within two decorate brick walls.

On Tuesday, the town’s planning director Lori Oakley informed the council that the university had amended its request to eliminate the sign and accompanying wall on the southwest corner of the intersection.
The council went on to vote 5-to-0 in favor of this proposal.
