Fall book sale now underway

Volunteer Anna Mock uses her own special brand of wizardry to squeeze in some extra science fiction and fantasy titles in preparation for the upcoming fall book sale that the Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries are preparing to hold beginning later this week.

This almost two week extravaganza, which will take place, as per usual, in the basement of Burlington’s May Memorial Library, will feature lots of hot picks in the sci-fi and fantasy realm from such sought-after authors as George R.R. Martin and Stephenie Meyer.

But the sale also has plenty on offer in other genres – not to mention some entirely new items that Kathy Oakley, one of the sale’s veteran organizers, has been keen to promote.

“The book kits are new,” Oakley explained as she pointed to a shelf full of one-title multipacks that are intended for book clubs and other reading collectives. “So, if you have a book club, it may be something you want to get.”

Oakley also pointed to an unusually large collection of puzzles that are guaranteed to delight and perplex book buyers with a weakness for the old fashioned brain teaser.

Slated to run from September 8 through September 17, this season’s sale will begin will a six-hour friends-only session on Friday – although those who aren’t up to date on their memberships can always renew at the door if they want to participate.

Once inside, customers will also want to take note of some minor adjustments in book prices – such as a 50 cent hike in the cost of a paperback and a reduced rate for children’s books.

“We’ve changed the prices of other items before,” added Laura Wright, one of the co-chairs of the upcoming sale. “But this is the first time in probably 20 years that we’ve changed the prices of books.”

Paperbacks are now $2.00, hardbacks are $3.00; children’s books are now only $1.00.

The event is held at the side entrance of the May Memorial Library, 342 South Spring Street in Burlington (use Davis Street entrance, downtown Burlington). Shoppers using a scanner will be charged a $10.00 fee, good for the entire sale.

Sale hours include: Friday, September 8, 12:00-6:00 p.m.; Saturday, September 9, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Sunday, September 10, 1:30-4:30 p.m.; and Monday, September 11 through Friday, September 14, 12:00-6:00 p.m.; Saturday, September 16, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; and Sunday, September 17, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
