A pair of high school coaches with area ties had the football season end for their teams Friday night.
Eastern Randolph, coached by Graham resident Burton Cates, lost 27-14 in the Class 1-A West Region third round to Corvian Community in a matchup of unbeaten teams.
The host Wildcats (12-1) committed turnovers on four consecutive first-half possessions as a 6-0 lead vanished.
“You can’t do that, have turnovers like that in the third round of the playoffs,” Cates said.
- North Moore is coached by former Southern Alamance player and coach Andrew Carrouth.
Wilson Prep defeated North Moore 56-22 in a Class 1-A East Region third-round game.
The Mustangs, who had home victories against Union and Bertie to open the postseason, finished with a 7-6 record.
Playoff drought halted
Western Guilford hadn’t made the state playoffs since 2012, marking the fifth-longest drought in the state among the teams that made it onto an NCHSAA playoff bracket this year.
Under former Graham coach Anthony Timmons, who was in his third season as coach of the Hornets, Western Guilford had a short-lived appearance in Class 4-A. The Hornets met unbeaten Greensboro Grimsley for the second time this season, losing 63-0 in the first round. Western Guilford ended with a 4-7 record.
Jones picked for East-West
Former Williams two-sport athlete Cam’ron Jones was selected to participate in the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game for football.
Jones, who finished his second season with Reidsville, is a receiver. The defending state champion Rams, who were the top seed in the Class 2-A West Region, suffered a stunning second-round loss in the state playoffs, falling 27-26 to No. 17 seed East Rutherford on November 22. Reidsville finished with an 11-1 record.
The all-star game will be held at 1:00 p.m. December 22 at Jamieson Stadium on the Greensboro Grimsley campus. It’s the second year in a row that the football game is set for December after it was moved from its long-standing July spot on the calendar.
