A man on the run from Guilford County’s sheriff was arrested in Burlington on Friday after he got into a high-stakes game of bumper cars with several sheriff’s deputies from Alamance County.
Danny Gene McBride, Jr. was ultimately taken into custody despite his increasingly desperate attempts to avoid capture, which allegedly included collisions with several patrol deputies who had boxed him in on the grounds of the New Market Square shopping center.
The events which led to McBride’s capture were set in motion on Friday when Guilford County’s sheriff alerted other agencies to be on the lookout for this 51-year-old white male from Snow Camp, who was wanted on charges that included assault on a government official.
According to the office of Alamance County’s sheriff, deputies from Alamance County eventually spotted McBride’s burgundy van near South Church Street’s intersection with Huffman Mill Road. The deputies followed the van into the parking lot of New Market Square, which is home to a Harris Teeter grocery store and other retailers.
“After seeing the deputies, McBride attempted to flee but was immediately cutoff by another deputy’s vehicle approaching him from the front,” the sheriff’s office went on to recall in a news release Wednesday. “McBride collided with the deputy’s vehicle. He then attempted to back up colliding with the deputies behind him.”
At that point, the deputies were able to extract McBride from his van and transport him to Alamance County’s jail.
The sheriff’s office has gone on to charge the Snow Camp resident with a galaxy of violations, which include felonies for assault on a government official, fleeing to elude arrest, and two counts of resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer. McBride also faces an additional charge for the possession of a controlled substance, 12 misdemeanor traffic violation, and five outstanding charges for failing to show up in court.
McBride’s bond has been set at $201,600.
