GKN to consolidate Person County plant with Mebane facility

GKN Driveline will close its manufacturing plant in Roxboro and will consolidate those operations with its facility at 1067 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road in Mebane, GKN officials said in a statement last week.

GKN Driveline North America, Inc. filed a “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification” (WARN notice) on Friday with the state commerce department, announcing its intention to close its facility at 6400 Durham Road in Timberlake.

The WARN notice states that 247 employees will be affected by the closure of GKN’s Person County plant, which is scheduled to take effect on December 31.

GKN said in its statement that all 247 employees at the Person County plant would be offered the opportunity to transfer to its location in Alamance County.

Federal law requires businesses with at least 100 full-time employees to provide 60 days’ notice of any planned closure that will result in mass layoffs.

Statewide, 19 employers have filed WARN Notices with the state commerce department announcing their intention to shutter facilities in 14 North Carolina counties, including Person and Alamance counties.  A total of 1,872 employees statewide are affected by pending business closures, according to WARN notices filed with the state commerce department between January 2 and March 8 of this year.

McMichael Mills, a yarn manufacturer, announced last month its intention to close a facility along Willow Spring Lane in Burlington at the end of March.  Those operations will be consolidated with the company’s existing location in Rockingham County, the company announced last month.

By comparison, no companies in Alamance County announced layoffs due to planned closures in 2023, based on WARN notices on file with the commerce department.
