Graham police report that a Graham man was struck and killed along NC 54 near Woody Drive Friday night when he apparently stepped into a lane of traffic.
The tragedy unfolded around 10:06 p.m. as Graham police officers were conducting a checking station on Exit 148, eastbound off-ramp of I-85/40 at NC Highway 54. A citizen pulled up to officers and advised that a pedestrian had been hit by a motor vehicle on the other side of the interchange, on East Harden Street (NC 54) at Woody Drive.
Officers immediately responded to the scene and discovered a man lying in the roadway. Officers immediately started CPR; EMS subsequently arrived and pronounced the man dead.
The driver of the motor vehicle involved (John Snead of Graham) remained at the scene.
The deceased pedestrian was identified as Earl Ray Brooks, white, male, 76, of Graham.
Witnesses stated Brooks walked out into the Snead vehicle’s lane of travel.
The police department’s preliminary investigation indicates that Brooks may have been intoxicated. This will be investigated by the medical examiner’s office. The police department reports that no charges will be filed regarding this incident.
