QUESTION: Has the porous roof over Alamance County’s detention center caused meltwater from this weekend’s storm to flood jail cells?
ANSWER: Although roof leaks have, indeed, been a problem in Alamance County’s jail, county officials contend that the resulting infiltration hasn’t turned the facility into veritable aquarium.
According to assistant county manager Brian Baker, the county’s maintenance staff has continued to patch these periodic leaks despite plans that are already in motion to replace the facility’s roof.
“During this past winter storm, we developed a small leak,” he went on to recall. “But the photos I’ve seen show a bucket full of water and some ceiling damage.”
Baker added that the county’s current budget contains funds for a wholesale roof replacement that’s scheduled to take place later this year.
