Jean Rose VonWachenfeldt, a woman of unwavering faith, boundless love, and quiet strength, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the age of 62, after a courageous battle with Stage 4 Neuroendocrine cancer. Born on August 17, 1962, in Schiller Park, Illinois, Jean spent most of her life near Chicago before making her home in Elon, North Carolina, in 2004.
Jean is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, John “Mike” VonWachenfeldt, with whom she shared a life of deep love and partnership since their wedding in June of 1981. She is also lovingly remembered by her mother, Norine Cocozza; her children, Jeffrey VonWachenfeldt, Laurie Lutsch, and Jason (Kristen) VonWachenfeldt; and her cherished grandchildren, Layna Lutsch, Tyler Lutsch, Ava VonWachenfeldt, and Jack VonWachenfeldt. Jean also leaves behind her brothers, Paul Cocozza and Steve(Julie) Cocozza, along with a wide circle of extended family and dear friends.
A devoted wife, nurturing mother, adoring “Gigi,” and steadfast caregiver to her son Jeff, Jean’s life was a testament to selfless love and service. Her deep and inspiring faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior was the foundation of her life and the source of her strength. Jean’s life verse, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30, NIV), was not only a guiding principle but a reflection of how she lived – with humility, grace, and a heart for others.
Jean’s passion for serving others was evident in every chapter of her life. She was actively involved in women’s ministries at St. Mark’s Community Church in Burlington, NC, where she led Bible studies and supported young mothers through the MOPS/MomCo program. She also served her community through the Women’s Service League and as a Guardian ad Litem for Alamance County, advocating for children in need with compassion and conviction.In keeping with her lifelong commitment to helping others, Jean chose to donate her body to Elon University for the advancement of medical education and scientific research.
Jean’s legacy is one of faith, family, and friendship. She touched countless lives with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the goodness of God. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on with her Savior and will be felt in the lives of those she loved and served so faithfully.
A Celebration of Life Service for Jean will be held at St. Mark’s Community Church on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 10am in the Chapel. A reception and visitation will follow in the lobby.
