There’s slightly more than a week remaining prior to the state playoffs for high school baseball and softball.

That means something different for some area teams. The Central 3-A Conference isn’t holding baseball and softball tournaments.

So teams in the conference will complete regular-season competition next week. Coaches saw no significant advantage of the tournaments, particularly with monitoring pitching workloads in baseball.

It also loosened up schedules with an extra week to get through the regular season.
“It was hard to get all the games in,” Western Alamance baseball coach Mitch Carter said.

Conferences aren’t required to hold tournaments, and others have dropped those as well.

The Mid-Carolina Conference is holding tournaments next week. The brackets in that nine-school league won’t include first-round games because Cummings hasn’t fielded a baseball or softball team this year, leaving eight teams participating in both tournaments beginning with quarterfinals.
