Conference tournaments involving area high school wrestling teams are scheduled for this week.
The seven-team Central 3-A Conference Tournament will be held Saturday at Williams.
The Mid-Carolina Conference, which has nine schools, will hold its conference tournament Saturday at Jordan-Matthews.
- Last week, Eastern Alamance won 33-29 at Southern Alamance in a Central 3-A Conference dual meet. It was Senior Night for the Patriots. Southern’s lone senior is Riley Neil, who competes in the middle weights.
Elijah Watson (120), Jayden Batten (126), Braxton Ballard (132), and Christopher Schild (190) recorded pins for Eastern. Southern’s Kamdyn Wagner (138) and Luke White (285) notched pins, and Jace Rich (157) won by technical fall.
The meet was contested without Southern coach Vincent Ramirez, who took that role as an in-season replacement in December. He had a prior commitment on the date of last week’s meet, so new assistant coach Braden Homsey was in charge.
Coach T Memorial Classic
Rich of Southern Alamance was a runner-up in the 19-team tournament Saturday at Durham Riverside.
Rich lost a 16-3 decision to Durham Riverside’s Marcello Luftig in the 157 final. Rich earlier notched two pins.
Fourth-place finishes went to Southern Alamance’s Bennett Teague (113) and White (285) and Southeast Alamance’s Maleek Booker (190).
In the girls’ division, Samari Acevedo of Southeast was the champion at 145.
Southeast’s Janiyah Quidachay was the 165 runner-up.
Rutha Say (107), Cece Maldonado (132), Katie Lloyd (138), and Gabby Canup (145) of Southeast placed third and teammate Layorah Jamison (114) was fourth. Southern’s Kyleigh Welch (120) also placed fourth.
Buccaneer Cup
Jose De Jesus Ponce Villalon of Graham won the 190-pound division in Saturday’s tournament at Bartlett Yancey.
He pinned William Hedgepeth of Southern Durham in 1:25 of the first-place match.
Runner-up spots went to Abdiel Gutierrez Moreon (120) of Williams with a 3-1 record and teammates Angler Laxson (165) and Gavin McMahan (175) along with Carson Gardner (157) of Eastern Alamance.
In the girls’ division, Laniya Johnson of Cummings was the champion at 132, winning with a pin and a technical fall. Eastern Alamance’s Jazmine Smith won at 235, pinning the only other entrant.
