Local students win American history essay awards

The Battle of Alamance Chapter, NSDAR American History Essay Contest Awards Ceremony took place on Saturday, February 10, at the Historic Woodlawn School in Mebane.

The winners were: Sixth grade – Kiera Kasa; Seventh grade – Iris Lin, who also won at the DAR District level this year; Eighth grade – Riya Anumakonda, who also won at the DAR District level this year. Riya has won first place for the past three years and has won at the DAR District during her seventh and eighth grade school years.

There were 76 entries. The Battle of Alamance Chapter, NSDAR awarded three first place winners, one for each grade. Tori Stadler, Chair of the American History Essay Contest Committee, distributed the medals, certificates and a small cash award to students.

The DAR American History Committee promotes American history throughout the year by honoring significant historical people, places, dates, and events. It does this in several ways one being this essay contest open to grades 5-8, and is called the American History Essay Contest.
