Man allegedly steals victim’s car after assaulting him with cane

A man from Burlington has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted another man with a cane and hightailed it out of town in the victim’s own car.

Burlington’s police department reports that 57-year-old McColline Thorpe, Jr. had initially been invited into the home of his 72-year-old victim shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Friday. The two men eventually got into a quarrel, however, at which point, Thorpe allegedly bashed his host in the head with a cane before he took the man’s car keys and fled in his car.

According to the city’s police department, Thorpe managed to get as far as Person County before the N.C. Highway Patrol pulled him over along NC 501 within two hours of his victim’s call to police. Thorpe was then taken into custody on a felony count of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Meanwhile, Thorpe faces two other counts of this same charge stemming from an incident that occurred along Trollinger Avenue on December 24. That earlier episode has also generated felony counts of motor vehicle theft and assault with serious injury.
