A man from Burlington has been arrested after he allegedly tried to kill another individual with a butcher knife at a local retail establishment.

According to Burlington’s police department, Richard Robert Mass-Blakely was taken into custody last Sunday morning shortly after the attack of 45-year-old Christopher Lee Oakes, who was reportedly knifed on the grounds of a Walmart Supercenter at 3141 Garden Road.

Court records indicate that the 24-year-old black male, who lives at 102 James Drive in Burlington, had stabbed Oakes with an “8-inch butcher knife.” These records offer no motive for the attack, while the city’s police department acknowledges that Mass-Blakely and Oakes didn’t know each other prior to their encounter on Sunday.

Mass-Blakley currently faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill. He has been held without bond since his arrest.
