Burlington man accused of biting police dog
In the news business, one adage of what makes “news” is when man bites dog, as opposed to the more common occurrence of a dog biting man. In a real life example of the proverbial man-bites-dog story, a Burlington resident has been charged with a felony crime after he allegedly sunk his teeth into one of the city’s police dogs.
This peculiar incident reportedly took place on Monday when members of Burlington’s police force visited a home at 828 Cornwallis Drive in order to serve Lashaun Warren Crump with an arrest warrant for a number of property crimes.
According to the city’s police department, the resistance of this 44-year-old black male turned this otherwise routine operation into a four-hour ordeal that ultimately drew in deputies from the office of Alamance County’s sheriff.
Meanwhile, court records provide additional details about the precise nature of Crump’s alleged recalcitrance, which apparently included an altercation with a police dog named Talon.
According to an arrest warrant filed later that day, Crump assaulted this trained canine “by biting him on the left ear with the intent to maim” – an act that resulted in a felony charge for assault on a law enforcement agency’s animal.
Crump also faces a misdemeanor violation for allegedly refusing to comply with the verbal commands of a police officer during this same operation.
Crump has been placed under a $50,000 bond since his arrest.
