Mebane’s city council has decided to add a stop in the city to the Link Transit bus system operated by the city of Burlington that also runs through Elon and Gibsonville and with a few stops in Graham, including at Alamance Community College.
The council had included $15,000 in its 2024-2025 budget t for the city’s contribution to Link Transit to extend a route from the community college to the existing park-and-ride lot at MedCenter Mebane, Cone Health’s Mebane medical facility along Arrowhead Boulevard near Tanger Outlet.
Monday night’s unanimous vote formalized the city’s contribution by adopting an inter-local agreement with Burlington on the addition of the Mebane stop.
A bus would stop about every 90 minutes, beginning at 7:10 a.m. to 8:50 p.m. Service on Saturday begins in Mebane at 10:10 a.m., with the last bus departing at 5:50 p.m.
The council will decide next month on one member to appoint to the Link Transit board.
The Link Transit board, formally known as the Public Transit Advisory Commission, currently consists of eight members – five appointed by the Burlington city council, as well as one member, each, appointed by the Gibsonville board of aldermen, the Elon town council, and the Alamance County board of commissioners. The ninth member will represent Mebane on the board.
Councilman Jonathan White asked whether the council would receive regular ridership reports on the participation at the Mebane stop.
John Andoh, transit manager for Link Transit, told White and the council, that when the system sends an invoice to the city every quarter, it will include monthly ridership figures for the Mebane stop.
