Work has begun on a project to improve an interchange in Alamance County, thanks to a contract recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The project calls for grading, drainage and paving work and new signals and structures at the Mebane Oaks Road interchange along Interstate 40/85.
It will include widening portions of the interchange and improving the Mebane Oaks Road intersections with Brundage/Forest Oaks Lane (on the south side of the interstate) and Cameron Lane/Arrowhead Boulevard (on the north side).
Work began Monday and is scheduled to be substantially complete by summer 2023.
Zachry Construction Corporation entered the lowest bid for the contract, $12.8 million. State law requires contracts be awarded to the lowest bidder among qualified contractors.
