Multiple principals moved to other schools in wake of senior pranks

Categories:

Multiple Alamance-Burlington high school principals are being reassigned to other schools amid the “senior pranks” that caused thousands of dollars in damages to schools late last month.

Alamance-Burlington school board members voted unanimously to approve the reassignments at their latest work session Tuesday afternoon.

ABSS superintendent Dr. Dain Butler didn’t directly attribute the changes to the senior pranks in a subsequent statement issued late Tuesday but said he’s “confident this will result in positive changes” across the school system.

Most notably, four high schools – Cummings, Eastern, Southern, and Williams – will have new principals when the new 2023-24 school year begins in August.

Those changes include:
Williams High School principal Dr. Helena Thomas has been transferred to serve as the principal at Cummings High School, effective Wednesday, June 14. Thomas has been replaced by Curry Bryan (formerly principal at Haw River Elementary School), effective Wednesday.

Eastern High School principal Dr. Whitney Fliehman has been transferred to serve as the principal at the Early College on the Alamance Community College campus, effective Wednesday. Suzanne Simpson took over as principal at Eastern on Wednesday. [See separate story this edition.]

Kristy Mills has been promoted from assistant principal to principal at Southern High School. She replaces Teresa Faucette, whose retirement takes effect June 30.

Several other ABSS principals have been promoted or moved to new schools for the upcoming school year; those changes appear to be unrelated to the senior pranks, based on the personnel report the school board approved Tuesday.

The vote to approve the administrative appointments (i.e., new assignments for principals, assistant principals, and central office directors) was 5-0.

School board member Chuck Marsh abstained from voting to approve the administrative appointments; his wife was among the recommended appointments. She has been promoted from assistant principal at South Graham Elementary to principal at the Alamance Virtual School.
